Duration:November 18-December 4

(※Open Work-in-Progress: November 18th-24th)
Venue : Spiral Garden

Spiral is proud to present “Tape Tokyo,” the first solo exhibition in Asia by Numen/For Use, at the Spiral Garden (Spiral 1F) from November 18th to December 4th.
Numen/For Use is a Croatia and Austria-based artist collective working in many fields, including industrial design, spatial design, stage design, and art installations. Their prolific and revolutionary work in theater set design since 2004 has won them worldwide acclaim, and the Gold Medal for Best Scene Design and Gold Medal for Best Use of Theatre Technology at the so-called “stage design Olympics,” the 2011 Prague Quadrennial. From scenography their work has subsequently evolved into art installations held at art museums and galleries around the globe. This autumn will see the debut in Asia of one of their major projects, the gigantic “Tape Installation,” a public art installation created out of vast amounts of adhesive vinyl tape.
“Tape Installation” is an art installation that developed out of a dance performance in which the trajectory of the dancers’ movements was traced with tape. The giant cocoon-like structure that will appear at “Tape Tokyo” will be like a parasite attached to Spiral’s atrium. The first part of the exhibition period will see the artists working with several assistants recruited by an open call in Japan. Together they will create the installation publicly, transforming it day by day as the work progresses. After it is complete, visitors
will be able to enter inside the installation for a viewing experience that feels like the artwork is
enveloping them.
Performances with the artwork as a stage set as well as talks are planned during the exhibition period, further sharing this interactive space with audiences.

Formed as an industrial design unit in 1998 and based in Austria and Croatia. It works across many fields, including stage design, industrial design, spatial design, and public art
and installations. It goes by the name of "For Use" mainly for their work in functional furniture design, while for work created even more freely beyond these frameworks it operates under the name "Numen" (from noumenon, meaning “substance”).
