BAKU TAKAHASHI Exhibition

─ MENTAL PICTURES #2 ─
2021.8.17-8.29

Exhibiting new works by glass artist BAKU TAKAHASHI, who has gained many fans with his organically shaped pieces and pop colors.

BAKU TAKAHASHI humorous works mix familiar forms with the memory of antique sculptures, with pictures he has seen online and with various landscapes that were buried deep in the artist's mind. Turned into glass parts, each representing "something I (the artist) might have seen somewhere, yet I cannot recall the context around that thing", the pieces are assembled in a combination of colors and shapes reminiscent of brick sets and block games.

Influenced by anime and video games, BAKU TAKAHASHI loves colorful objects, revealing in this new body of works, unexpected combinations of colors and forms and giving a fresh surprise to his fans.

This summer we celebrate the eccentric world of BAKU TAKAHASHI.

──MENTAL PICTURES

My work begins with the resurgence of images in my memory.
Various visuals come to me from landscapes, to someone else's art work and images from the Internet. I dig up my mind to find back the things that I care about, and sketch them.
Then I turn my sketches into glass parts and combine them together. At that stage, I am careful not to be bound by the context of the underlying memories. It's hard to explain, but I value the feeling that I am participating in my creations like an outsider, looking at my work as if I was part of the audience.

I have developped this creative process, as I wanted to create something that I could not even imagine. I regard the resulting work as something I might have seen somewhere, yet I cannot recall the context around that thing.  I also noticed that when I look at my pieces, I tend to compare them and to find similarities with other memories.

Perhaps those who see my works may join them with an element in their memory or remember something else out of them. I find it very interesting that each person has their own interpretation around my glass sculptures.
