Garden of Eden

Jerusalem Design Week
18 (fri) - 27 (sun) October, 2019

Israel, a unique player on the international design field, developed a surprising design DNA. A land of innovation where ancient roots and rich tradition merge with contemporary existence creating a vibrant & dynamic eco-system both for a thriving high tech industry as well as the design field. Israel’s unique context creates design which merges East and West, Old and New, Religious and Secular, unique to a place that is a junction of worlds. Israel is honored to be invited with the most leading design event in Israel, as the Partner Country to DESIGNART TOKYO 2019 and share and introduce Israeli design to the Japanese public.

Jerusalem Design Week initiated by the Ministry of Jerusalem and Heritage and The Jerusalem Development Authority, is Israel’s most influential public design event with more than 200 international designers. Each year JDW focuses its attention on a socio-cultural central theme with the belief that design must respond to such issues. Japanese creators who attracted attention at DESIGNART last year joined in JDW 2019, held in June. They, as well as a founder Akio Aoki, had close relationships with local interested parties, leading to the Partner Country to DAT 2019. The Tokyo event sets off its first major international presence through two projects in two different locations in Aoyama and Kagurazaka. The Exhibition “Garden of Eden” at Spiral arts complex in Aoyama leads visitors between local Israeli perspective on nature, culture, technology and myth. This journey culminates in the Spiral, where two local myths of Israel’s resources meet: Dead Sea salt, and Wheat, a generator of the agricultural revolution and modern life. In between these myths of life and death, architectural interpretations of local flowers are hidden in secret private gardens, which, like the original Garden of Eden, can only be imagined, but are barred from entry. The exhibition space is designed by YSLA architects based in Tokyo in collaboration with Takeshi Yamamura architecture lab., Waseda University.
