KUNITO: Fired Meteorite

SICF24 EXHIBITION Grand Prize Artist Exhibition
2024.5.10 - 26
Fallen cells(2016)cloth, FRP, ball, steel photo: marc and porter

Spiral is pleased to present Fired Meteorite, a solo exhibition of the work of KUNITO, who was awarded the Grand Prize among 100 creators in the EXHIBITION Section of SICF24 (the 24th Spiral Independent Creators Festival) in May 2023.

Originally trained in ceramics, KUNITO creates sculptures and installations using a wide range of materials including resin, fabric, wood, glass, and light. His Grand Prize-winning work, Pillars of Creation, is an FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic) sculpture inspired by an imagined scenario of clay, dropped from space towards Earth, which is fired by compressive heat upon entering the atmosphere, resulting in the final forms appearing in the work. The design takes into account deformation due to air resistance and gravity, as well as vitrification of surfaces due to heat, and the extraordinary shapes and novel textures resembling both metal and lacquer are entrancing to viewers. The grandeur of the concept and the high level of skill and refinement needed to complete the work were key factors in its winning the Grand Prize.

The exhibition, held in the circular space that is emblematic of the Spiral venue, will feature an installation that explores the question: What if multiple pieces of clay fell from the sky and were fired as described above? With unprecedented scale and scope of imagination, the show will feature Pillars of Creation, two previous works titled Fallen cells, and one new work.
