フィンランドを拠点とするデザインスタジオ「STUDIO smoo（スタジオスモー）」を主宰するマリアンネ・フオタリの日本初個展「KOTISEUTU–The Spirit of Roots」を開催しました。

フィンランドの伝統的な文化や豊かな自然、織物や古い家の色、地面に落ちた花びら、キラキラ光る小さな池の水面など、彼女をとりまく身近な環境を取り込んだ優しさと温もりあふれる作品の数々。フオタリは、フィンランドの自然を想起させる多様な色の小さな陶器のピースを絶妙な色彩感覚で緻密につなぎあわせ、思い浮かんだ情景を作品として具現化させます。

本展では、フィンランド語でふるさとを意味する“KOTISEUTU”と名付けたインスタレーションを展開。陶器という素材を、まるでテキスタイルのように編み込み絵の具のように用い描いた作品は、テクスチャーの斬新さと手仕事の細密さから見る者を魅了しました。

セラミックウォールインスタレーション“KOTISEUTU”は、私の祖父母が住むフィンランド郊外の古くからある典型的な田舎町Pekankyläが発想の原点となっています。Pekankyläには、家々と湖、鳥、魚、多様な種類の植物が共生し、自然と人々の温もりあふれる景色が広がっています。“Kantola（切り株）”と名付けられた祖父母の家のまわりには、湖の煌めきや猛々しい森林など東フィンランドの神秘的な景観がありました。私はそこを訪れるたびに、森の中でぷっくりとしたベリーを摘んで食べたり、朝早くからライトブルーの空の下湖で釣りをしたり、湖畔で様々なテクスチャーの自然に触れながらピクニックをしたり、色彩豊かな充実した日々を過ごしていました。本作“KOTISEUTU – The spirit of roots”は、そういったふるさとの風景をセラミックのピースで表現している作品で、自らのルーツや原体験を発想の源とする背景から名付けています。

Marianne Huotari “KOTISEUTU—The Spirit of Roots”

“Kotiseutu—The Spirit of Roots” was the first solo exhibition in Japan by Marianne Huotari of STUDIO smoo, a leading Finnish design studio.

It featured numerous examples of her work that is abundantly gentle and warm,incorporating the familiar environment that surrounds her such as traditional Finnish culture, its rich nature, the colors of textiles and old houses, petals on the ground, and the surface of a small pond that glimmers in the light. Marianne Huotari’s work intricately stitches together small yet diverselycolored ceramic pieces redolent of Finland’s natural landscape, relying on her superb sense of color and embodying an emotionally evocative scenery.

The exhibition was an installation called Kotiseutu, a word meaning roughly “homeland” in Finnish. The featured pieces utilized their ceramic material almost like textiles or paints, beguiling viewers with the innovation of their texture and the intricacy of their handiwork.
