森下真樹によるダンス公演「ベートーヴェン交響曲第5番『運命』全楽章を踊る」をスパイラルホールにて開催しました。

本公演は、日本で初めてベートーヴェンの交響曲が演奏されたといわれる1918年から100年目を迎えることをうけ、交響曲第5番「運命」の全楽章を、時代を牽引する気鋭のアーティストMIKIKO、森山未來、石川直樹、笠井叡による振付で踊るものです。本公演では、交響曲をピアノ一台で演奏するというユニークな試みを展開。誰もがそのメロディを想起することができる「運命」の旋律に、揺れ動く不安な社会、さまざまな文化がぶつかり合いながらも共存する現代を投影し、その先へと続くあらたな光を照射しました。

関連企画として、スパイラルガーデン、MINA-TOにて第三楽章の振り付けを担当した石川直樹による写真展「New Map for North 知床×運命」を開催。北方世界の入り口と言われている、知床を舞台に壮大な自然とそこに暮らす人間の営みを記録したシリーズ「New Map for North」を中心に、石川が初めて振付を手がけた本ダンス公演のクリエイションとして森下真樹と同地を訪れた際に撮影した新作を展示しました。

Dancing Beethoven’s Symphony No.5 Spiral Hall hosted Dancing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, a dance performance by Maki Morishita.

Marking 100 years since the first recital in Japan in 1918 of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, the entire symphony, which is known as “Destiny” in Japan, was performed as dance choreographed by leading artists MIKIKO, Mirai Moriyama, Naoki Ishikawa, and Akira Kasai. In a very unusual arrangement, the music of the symphony itself was played on one piano.
Onto the well-known melody of Beethoven’s symphony, this performance projected hints of the present day where our fluctuating and uncertain society as well as various kinds of culture all collide and coexist, in the process exposing the new light that illuminates what lies ahead.

As a related event, Spiral Garden and MINA-TO hosted “New Map for North: Shiretoko x Destiny,” a photography exhibition by Naoki Ishikawa, who choreographed the third movement. With a focus on the New Map for North series recording the majestic nature of Shiretoko, a peninsula in Japan regarded as the gateway to the world north of the archipelago, and the people who live there, it featured new photographs taken when Morishita and Ishikawa visited the region as part of the creative development for the performance, in which Ishikawa took on the role of a choreographer for the first time.
