SICF18に於いて出展クリエーター150組の中からグランプリに輝いたアーティスト・東城信之介による個展を開催しました。

厚さわずか0.3mmの鋼や銅など多種多様な金属板を酸化させたり、その表面に細かい傷をつけることによって、素材の奥にも手前にも不思議なイリュージョン空間が生み出された、作品の数々は、レンチキュラーやホログラムとはまた違う、未だかつて経験したことのない視覚体験へと私たちを誘います。SICF18では、自在にイリュージョン空間を生み出す精妙な技術力と、絵画と彫刻の境界を巡る美術史上の議論を想起させながらも、なお新しい道を提示したことが高く評価され、グランプリ受賞に至りました。

本展は、各国のアートフェアへの出展や、中之条ビエンナーレ（群馬）の立ち上げメンバーとして活躍するなど長くキャリアを積む一方で、東京のアートシーンにおいて登場する機会が少なかった東城の東京・青山での初の個展となりました。

Shinnosuke Tojo Cover up the KOKO

This solo exhibition featured the work of the artist Shinnosuke Tojo, the winner of the Grand Prize from the 150 entrants at SICF18.

Oxidizing 0.3mm sheets of steel, copper, and other metals, Tojo then makes intricate marks on their surfaces to create his artworks that conjure up a strange and illusory space extending from the very front to the depth of the materials. The results offer a visual experience that is neither like a lenticular print nor a hologram, but something entirely new. At SICF18, Tojo’s work received the Grand Prize following much praise from the award judges for how it stirs up discussion about art history as well as its subtle technical skill, which freely produces an illusory space.

Though Tojo has built a notable career exhibiting at international art fairs and as one of the founders of the Nakanojo Biennale in Gunma Prefecture, there had been relatively few opportunities in Tokyo to experience Tojo’s work. This was his first, much-anticipated solo exhibition in Aoyama, Tokyo.
